Vegan eating is receiving a lot of press these days. It seems to be the celebrity fad-du-jour. Even Oprah tried it for a few weeks. But what exactly does it mean to go vegan? Well that really depends on whether you are coming at it from the perspective of a dietary style or a lifestyle.

When the label vegan is used to describe a way of eating, it means no animal product is consumed. In addition to foregoing meat, chicken and fish, as vegetarians do, vegans also pass up eggs, and dairy products like milk and cheese and yogurt. Sometimes vegans are called strict vegetarians.

Others strongly believe that the term vegan is an ideological description and that you must be an animal rights activist to be truly vegan. Generally these people have come to veganism through a strong desire to prevent the mistreatment or slaughter of any animal.

Vegans who are motivated by ideology will also eschew all other animal products to the best of their abilities. They will not buy leather products, or products made from animals, such as leather, fur, or ivory. Nor will they buy products that have been tested on animals.

In todays society it is virtually impossible to avoid all animal products since many animal byproducts are used in manufacturing. Often this is because the animal byproducts are rather inexpensive. Bone char (made from the bones of slaughtered animals) is used to refine many sugars. Rubber is processed using animal products. Sheetrock contains horsehair. It is often impossible to avoid animal byproducts. Since it is practically impossible to be a perfect vegan, most vegans adopt the stance of trying to do the best that they can.

While many people can understand and accept the idea that some people want to give up eating meat, after all the animal you are eating has been killed for your meal. Eschewing eggs and dairy is another story however. Since the animals arent being killed, it doesnt make a lot of sense to most people that there would be a reason to give up dairy and eggs. However, even though the cows and chickens are slaughtered for their milk and eggs, they mostly live in terrible conditions. In order to mass produce enough milk and eggs, farms have been basically turned into factory farms. Animals are crammed together in horrific conditions, often locked in a cage for the duration of their lives. And once they are no longer producing, then the route to their slaughter is often torturous. Vegans give up eggs and dairy in order to avoid participating in this cruelty.

Other reasons to give up dairy and eggs revolve around health issues. There is a wealth of data which supports a vegan diet is much healthier than the Standard American Diet (SAD). Instances of cancer, heart attack, stroke, and diabetes are dramatically lower in the vegan population.

Finally, there is significant evidence pointing to the fact that eating animals and animal products increases global warming. It takes significantly more energy to produce food from animals than it does to produce food from vegetables. This uses more resources, and causes more pollution.

Some people maintain that you must be an animal activist if you are a vegan. For most people the move to veganism comes from an interest in animal rights and animal welfare.

These philosophical vegans do not want to contribute to the mistreatment or slaughter of any animal. In addition to avoiding animal products in their food, the will not buy anything made from animal products. Examples would be leather shoes, wallets, purses, furniture, etc.

Since it is impossible to live in society today and not consume animal products in some fashion, the philosophical vegan will strive to eschew animal products. There are hidden animal products in many products you would never expect. Sheetrock often contains horsehair. Violin bows are usually made from horsehair. Nutritious and Delicious: Vegetarian Navy Bean Soup

Vegetarian cooking does not have to be boring or bland, and there are actually many delicious vegan recipes that you can prepare, which will be a delight, even to non-vegans. One of the favorite vegan recipes is the vegetarian navy bean soup, and although there are many versions and variations to this recipe, there is the basic vegetarian navy bean soup recipe which is as follows.

Vegetarian Navy Bean Soup

For the basic vegetarian navy bean soup you will need 2 cups cooked navy beans with their liquid, ½ cup diced celery, ¾ cup diced carrot, ¾ cup diced onion, 1 teaspoon of smoke oil or other comparable smoke flavoring, ¼ teaspoon black pepper, 1 teaspoon granulated garlic, 3 cups water, 1 small diced tomato, ½ cup white flour, 1/8 cup vegetable oil, and salt to taste.

The preparation process of this dish is very simple. Start by mixing all of the ingredients except for the beans, vegetable oil, flour, and salt. You want to mix them in a stock pot and then bring this mixture to a boil. The next step is to add the beans to the boiling mixture and then mix the flour and oil together into a roux and crumble this into the boiling soup while stirring to avoid lumps.

You want to salt to taste as the mixture cooks and thickens, and then serve immediately. This vegetarian navy bean soup recipe is loved all around the world, but remember that there are many variations to it and so if there are certain ingredients you would like to omit or include, you can do this, or just choose another version of this same recipe.

Meat lovers can add their favorite meat into this dish, and even replace the beans with meat if they wish. One of the best features of this dish is that you can basically add as many ingredients as you like without ruining the overall taste and presentation. It is also very nutritious and so it is a dish that you can include as a family staple, even for younger aged children.

You may want to serve this soup with a side, such as a potato or macaroni salad or even some rice pilaf, but it is hearty and filling to serve just on its own. Be creative and experiment in the kitchen and you are sure to end up making this soup one of your favorite family meals.
